The origin of herbal pillows goes back as early as the 16th century in Europe. In those days herbs were seen as having magical powers, and different herbs were used for different effects. Herbal pillows were used for calming crying babies; in sickrooms to heal the ill; reduce stress; ward off evil; banish nightmares; tell fortunes; and even assist in attracting love and romance.
Herbal pillows are a small bag filled with specially selected herbs to achieve a desired effect. They are placed under a pillow or inserted into a pillowcase. As a person’s head moves during sleep, the herbs are lightly crushed and their aromas are released. As the nose is known to be the most direct route to the mind, the scent of the herbs affects dreams and the subconscious.
